Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Bharat Dev Varma, the husband of veteran actress Moon Moon Sen and father to actresses Raima and Riya Sen, passed away at his residence in Kolkata on Tuesday. His health reportedly deteriorated earlier in the day, prompting the family to call an ambulance from a Dhakuria hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his condition before reaching the hospital.
Belonging to the erstwhile royal family of Tripura, Bharat Dev Varma was a man of regal lineage. His mother, Ila Devi, hailed from the princely state of Cooch Behar and was the elder sister of Gayatri Devi, the celebrated Maharani of Jaipur. His grandmother, Indira, was the daughter of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaikwad III of Vadodara.
Bharat married Moon Moon Sen in 1978, tying two distinguished lineages together. Moon Moon Sen herself belongs to a family with deep roots in Bengal’s history. She is the daughter of legendary actress Suchitra Sen and businessman Dibanath Sen. Her family’s heritage traces back to Ballygunge Place in Kolkata, where her father was one of the wealthiest men of his era.
Moon Moon Sen began her acting career after marriage and motherhood, debuting in the 1984 film Andar Baahar. Over the years, she featured in numerous acclaimed films, including 100 Days, Zakhmi Dil, and the Telugu classic Sirivennela. With appearances in 60 films and 40 television series, she also won the Nandi Award for Best Supporting Actress in Andhra Pradesh.
Bharat and Moon Moon’s daughters, Raima and Riya Sen, have carried forward their family’s artistic legacy. Raima is renowned for her work in films like Manorama Six Feet Under, Baishey Srabon, and Nouka Dubi. Riya gained fame for her roles in Style, Apna Sapna Money Money, and the recent Amazon Prime series Call Me Bae.
The loss of Bharat Dev Varma is a significant blow to the family, and his contributions to preserving royal heritage remain a cherished part of his legacy.
